The Apple iPod touch (5th Generation) represented a major redesign and performance boost for Apple’s signature media player. The 16GB Silver model epitomizes the iPod touch line as an ultra-portable, iOS-powered device, adopting the sleek aluminum unibody look and taller 4-inch display introduced with the iPhone 5.
Key Features
- Design & Display: Measuring just 6.1 mm thin and weighing 88 grams, the device was incredibly light. It featured a brilliant 4-inch Multi-Touch Retina Display with a resolution of pixels at 326 pixels per inch (ppi), providing sharp text and vivid visuals.
- Performance: It was powered by the dual-core Apple A5 chip (the same as in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2), which delivered a massive improvement in speed and graphical performance over the previous generation, making it capable of running more complex games and apps.
- Connectivity & Audio: The 5th Gen introduced the smaller, reversible Lightning connector, replacing the old 30-pin dock. It also supported dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.0, and came bundled with Apple’s redesigned EarPods.
The Two 16GB Models (A Crucial Distinction)
The 16GB capacity was released in two versions, which is an important consideration when referencing this model:
- Mid-2013 16GB Model (Black Front/Silver Back): This initial “entry-level” version was priced lower by removing two key components: the 5-megapixel rear iSight camera and the external iPod touch loop button/attachment point. It was limited to the single Silver color with a Black glass front.
- Mid-2014 16GB Model (White Front/Silver Back): This later revision brought the 16GB model up to the standard specifications of the 32GB and 64GB versions. It included the full 5MP iSight camera (capable of 1080p HD video and panorama), LED flash, and the iPod touch loop attachment. This model also had a White glass front, consistent with the other colored versions.
Both 16GB versions offered the front-facing MP FaceTime HD camera, access to the App Store, and included the Siri voice assistant. The maximum supported operating system for all 5th Generation iPod touches is iOS 9.3.5.
